Thus there were at least two men named Solomon Allred living in North
Carolina, where they both fathered sons named Solomon born c. 1770-1772. One
died in Richmond County, North Carolina in 1782, and had a son named Solomon
born c. 1770. One was born in the 1740s, lived to a ripe old age in Overton
County, Tennessee, and had a son named Solomon born c. 1772. The first had
a son named Phineas, and someone had a grandson named Theophilus. All three
names appear in the Allred/Pemberton family of Chester County, Pennsylvania
(more on this below). But the census records show that if the Solomon Alred
who appears on the Chester County tax lists for 1724 and 1730 was the
ancestor of Phineas Alred (of Barnwell, South Carolina) and of Theophilus
Allred (of Overton County, Tennessee), he must have been the grandfather, not
the father, of the “original” Allreds, because the two Solomons must have had
different fathers. We are looking for two different lines of Allreds.
It is commonly stated that the “original” John Allred had two wives:
(1) Lillie Ann, ancestry unknown; and (2) Margaret Chaney or Cheney, daughter
of Francis Chaney of New Kent, Virginia and Sarah Aurick of Ireland. Dr.
Rulon C. Allred stated that John Allred “may have married Lillian, as some
records show her as the mother to the above named children (referring to the
twelve children named in John’s will). However, the place she occupied in
the family, whether as first or second wife, and the children she may have
had, is not now known.” Neither of these wives is named in the Last Will
and Testament of John Allred, dated 15 September 1792. Their names come
from one source only, the deeds recorded at the Randolph County Court House.
Apparently, no one has examined them carefully until now.
The name of Margaret Alred appears on Warranty Deeds dated 26 April 1801
(Book 8, Page 232) and 6 May 1804 (Book 8 Page 431), wherein P. Francis
Chaney Sr. names her as his daughter. The name of Jonathan Allred appears
on a Warranty Deed dated 26 April 1801 (Book 8, Page 232) wherein P. Francis
Chaney names him as his grandson. Thus we may conclude that Margaret Chaney
was the mother of Jonathan Allred; that Margaret Chaney was married to John
Allred before 8 March 1774, the birth date inscribed on Jonathan Allred’s
gravestone; and that Margaret Chaney survived her husband, although she is
not named in his will dated 15 September 1792. Francis Chaney Sr., Francis
Chaney Jr., Michael Harvey Sr., Margret Alred, Margrett Stillwell and John
Chaney, all of Randolph County, are all named in a deed dated 27 September
1804 (Book 8, Page 500), and all may be related. Francis Chaney (and James
Chaney) appear on the 1755 tax list for Randolph County. No one knows when
Margaret Chaney, daughter of Francis Chaney Sr., was born; but 1755 is early
enough for her to have been the mother of all of John Allred’s children.
The name of Lillie Ann Aldred appears on a Warranty Deed dated 24 January
1784 (Book 2, Page 76), wherein John Aldred names her as his wife. There
is proof that this is not the same man who was married to Margaret Chaney.
Neither man was literate. Instead, they affixed their marks to documents of
record. The mark of John Aldred, husband of Lillie Ann Aldred, as it appears
on the Warranty Deed dated 24 January 1784, was a capital A. The mark of
John Allred, father of Jonathan Allred, husband of Margaret Chaney, as it
appears on his Last Will and Testament dated 15 September 1792, was three
vertical lines connected by a horizontal line, resembling three plus signs
+++ The same mark appears on a Land Grant to John Alred, dated 15 March
1756. His original land entry is dated one year earlier, 15 March 1755,
which fixes his birth date as no later than 15 March 1734, because, by law,
he had to be at least 21 years of age in order to obtain a land grant.
