FOR JOHN

I have never met another soul like you.
No one ever treated me with as much kindness as you do.
You did not even know me, and you took me by surprise,
In a world so filled with selfishness, hypocrisy and lies.

All around me there are people on the make.
I have struggled all my life and I have never had a break.
Everything I am I have accomplished on my own.
This has made me self-reliant, but has left me all alone.

When I saw you on that stage,
You were barely half my age,
And already such a talented musician;
And your singing touched my heart,
And I knew right from the start,
That I did not want to be your competition.

When I met you I was ready to leave town.
You did everything you could to see that I would stick around:
You opened up your heart, and you reached to me your hand.
And now I am repaying you, in the only way I can.
