Raquette River Pulp Mill in Colton). Died 16 July 1939, Canton, St.
Lawrence, New York. Buried at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Colton.
Six children: James M. (Born c. 1883), Julia (Born c. 1886), and
Mary (Born c. 1897); three others died young.
Julia Hayes: Born 1861, Colton, St. Lawrence, New York. Married
before 18 June 1900 (ref. Liber 155A, Page 467, Deeds of St. Lawrence
County) to John Devlin of Canton (Born c. 1864). Living 1915,
101 Miner Street, Canton (ref. 1915 St. Lawrence County Census).
Jeremiah C. Hayes: Born 1 August 1864, Colton, St. Lawrence, New York.
Died 19 September 1959, Potsdam, St. Lawrence, New York. Married
Etta M. Collins (Born 31 August 1875, Died 6 October 1958, daughter of
Norman Collins and Orphiah Smith). Worked for Emporium Lumber Company,
Cranberry Lake, New York. Retired in 1939 and moved to Potsdam. Buried
at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Colton. Eight children: Floyd Collins
(Born 13 September 1895, Died January 1972, Potsdam), Lucille M. Henson
(Born 18 December 1899, Died May 1982, Hamburg, Erie, New York), Mary J.
(Born 1902, Died 1968), James (Born 7 July 1910, Died 30 January 2004,
Potsdam), Richard (Living 1959, Stockton, San Joaquin, California),
and Bernadine (Born 1914, Died 1945). Three others died in infancy:
Mary E. (1897), Anna B. (1906), and Margaret E. (1909).
Michael Hayes: Born 26 September 1867, Colton, St. Lawrence, New York.
Married on 25 December 1889 to Harriett “Hattie” Salls (Born 28 August
1870, Pierrepont, New York, Died 24 April 1851, Colton, New York,
daughter of Frederick Salls and Jane Gibson). Died 10 June 1957, Canton,
St. Lawrence, New York. Buried at Pleasant Mound Cemetery in Colton.

Mary G. "Mayme" Hayes: Born 29 October 1873, Colton, St. Lawrence,
New York. Married in 1900 to Jesse Edgar Crossman (Born 7 July 1869,
Pierrepont, New York, Died 20 April 1932, Colton, New York). Died
16 October 1959, Colton, St. Lawrence, New York. Buried at St. Patrick’s
Cemetery in Colton. Two children: Francis (Born 30 June 1905, Died
October 1980, Colton) and Irene (Mrs. Robert Smith, Born c. 1915).
Cornelius Hayes was the son of Jeremiah and Johanna Hayes, as documented by
his death certificate, the data from which was provided by the Colton Town
Historian. All census records indicate that Cornelius and his parents were
born in Ireland. His date of birth is listed as January 1824 in the 1900
United States census; other records are inconsistent with this date. He
married Honora Hourihan, a native of Ireland. Her date of birth is listed as
March 1832 in the 1900 United States census; other records are inconsistent
with this date. According to her death certificate, Honora was the daughter
of Jeremiah Hourihan and Julia Carl (sic), which is not an Irish name and is
probably a misspelling of Carroll. According to the 1900 census, Cornelius
