ANCESTRY OF MICHAEL HAYES

Cornelius Hayes: Born January 1824, Cork, Ireland; Died 25 January 1907,
Colton, New York. Married 1852 to Honora Hourihan (Born March 1832,
Ireland; Died 4 January 1911, Colton, New York). Both are buried at St.
Patrick’s Cemetery in Colton). Six children: James (Born 1854, New
   York); Johannah (Born 14 May 1857, New York); Julia (Born 1861, New York);
Jeremiah C. (Born 1 August 1864, New York); Michael (Born 16 September
1867, New York; and Mary G. (Born 29 October 1873, New York).

James Hayes: Born c. 1830, Cork, Ireland. Married Sarah (Born c.
1832/1834, Ireland). One son: John (Born c. 1858, New York).

Note: The surname is spelled “Hayes” on all the early gravestones.
In general, the name is spelled “Hays” in the public records until the
inauguration of President Hayes in 1877.

Also appearing in the records of St. Lawrence County at this time were
Michael and Margaret Hourihan. Gravestone inscriptions at St. Patrick’s
Cemetery in Colton state that Michael was born on 15 September 1821, and
Margaret was born on 18 May 1833; all census records state that they were
both born in Ireland. According to the St. Lawrence County Alien Reports,
Michael arrived in 1850, applied for United States citizenship on 5 December
1855, and became a citizen on 17 December 1857. In the 1900 United States
census, Margaret’s arrival date is listed as 1857. Michael and Margaret had
six children, all born in New York. A comparison of census records with
gravestone inscriptions show that one child died in infancy (Honorah, Born
c. 1867, Died 31 March 1872), and three died during the diphtheria epidemic
of 1881 (Maggie, Born c. 1869, Died 22 November 1881; James, Born c. 1865,
Died 4 December 1881; and Julia, Born c. 1861, Died 29 December 1881). Only
John (Born c. 1859) and Dennis (Born May 1864) lived into adulthood.

While Michael’s name is spelled various ways in the public records (Hanarahn,
Handrahan, Hanrahan), the name is spelled “Hourihan” in the 1900 United
States census for Hopkinton and on the family gravestone in Colton. Michael
had a daughter named Honora, and Honora had a son named Michael. There is
little doubt that they were related; probably they were brother and sister.
Family relationships are similarly indicated the names of the Hayes children.
Daniel and Cornelius both had sons named James and Jeremiah.

In the Atlas of St. Lawrence County, Town of Colton, 1865, the houses of the
Hayes and Hourihan clan are shown in Mile Square Lots No. 10 and 16, at the
junction of Windmill Road and French Hill Road, from north to south: James
Hayes, Cornelius Hayes, Michael Hourihan (Hanrahan), and Daniel Hayes.
Between 1872 and 1875, Cornelius and Honorah Hayes actually owned a 61-acre
farm in Mile Square Lot No. 10, one mile north of a farm owned by James D.
Hayes, son of Daniel Hayes (named in his will).

Daniel, Jeremiah, Cornelius, and James Hayes may have had sisters, but if
these women were already married before 1860, they would not be identifiable
as Hayes (Hays) women in the 1860 census.

The identity of Joanna Hayes (Born c. 1842, Cork, Ireland), wife of John
Kearney, is inferred by the following: (1) she was too young to have been
the daughter of Jeremiah and Johanna, the elders; (2) she is not named in
