listed as head of household, living with his wife Honore (27), their two eldest children
James (6) and Joanna (3), and Cornelius' father and mother, Jeremiah (88) and Joanna (61).
Also listed as heads of households are James Hays (30), Daniel Hays (50), and Michael
"Handrahan" (Hourihan) (34), listed consecutively, being neighbors living side by side.
BELOW: The 1860 United States Census for Canton, New York. Joanna Hayes (18) is listed
as a domestic servant in the household of Seth Williston Remington (University Preacher)
and Seth Pierrepont Remington (Newspaper Editor), grandfather and father of famed
American artist Frederic Remington. Her gravestone inscription at St. Patrick's Cemetery
in Colton reads as follows: "Johana Hayes, Wife of John Kearney, Died 6 June 1869, Age 28."
BELOW: The 1870 United States Census for Colton, New York. Cornelius Hays (50) and
his wife Honorah (38) now have five children: James (16), Johanna (13), Julia (9),
Jeremiah (6), and Michael (3). Living with them is Cornelius' mother Johanna (90),
his father Jeremiah now deceased. Note that the ages of Cornelius and his mother
are inconsistent with the 1860 census.
BELOW: The 1880 United States Census for Colton, New York. Cornelius Hayes (56) and
Honora Hayes (48) are living with their four of their children: Johana (23), Jerry (15),
Michael (13), and Mary (6). Living next door are Jerry (Jeremiah) Hayes, his wife
Bridgett, and five children, including two sets of twins. Jerry was the son of Daniel
and Catherine Hayes (see 1860 census, above), and was probably a nephew of Cornelius.
BELOW: The 1900 United States Census for Colton, New York. Cornelius Hayes (76) and
his wife "Hannah" (68) are living with their daughter Mary (26). These ages are
consistent with the 1880 census. Their birth dates are listed as January 1824 and
March 1832. Their son Michael Hayes (33) is living with his wife "Elizabeth H." (30)
and daughter Stella J. Hayes (8). Living next door are Horace L. Salls and family.
Horace was the brother of Michael's wife, Harriett "Hattie" Salls.
