It is well documented in the census records that the Hieter (Hüter) family
settled in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Between 1790 and 1840, the census named
only the head of household, with all others differentiated only by gender and
age bracket. The 1790 census gives a count of men over 16, men under 16, and
women with no age differentiation. The 1800 census divides both males and
females into five age brackets (<10, 10-15, 16-25, 26-45, 45+).
In the 1790 census rolls there are four households in Bucks County with the
name of Hieter (Adam Hieter, Jacob Hieter, John Heiter, and Benjamin Hieter).
Three children are still living with Hans Adam Hieter and his wife. Two are
boys under 16; these would be the youngest, Jacob (born 3 July 1774) and Adam
(born 14 Nov 1776). John and Benjamin both have three boys under 16.
1790 UNITED STATES CENSUS, BERKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA

John Heiter 1 3 1 Maxatany
Adam Hieter 1 2 2 Earl
Benjamin Hieter 1 3 1 Earl
Jacob Hieter 1 0 0 Ruscomb
In the 1800 census the same four names appear as heads of households, along
with Adam Hieter and Jacob Hieter, the youngest sons of (Hans) Adam Hieter.
Only (Hans) Adam Hieter and John Heiter are listed as at least 45 years old.
The other four men were born later than 1755, and thus could not have been
first generation immigrants. Benjamin Heiter, and Jacob Hieter of Earl
Township, and Adam Hieter were almost certainly the sons of Hans Adam Hieter.

Norma Celia Heter, my paternal grandmother, was descended from Johannes Adam
Hieter, youngest child of Hans Adam Hieter and Elizabeth Milot, with whom he
was living in 1790. Johannes Adam Hieter married Maria Roth, and at some
point they moved to Union County (now Snyder County) in central Pennsylvania.
I distinctly remember from family records that they lived in West Beaver
Township. According to the Mormon website, Johannes Adam Hüter or Hieter and
Maria Eva Roth had seven or eight children:
