ANCESTRY OF WILL PHILLIPS

This cemetery is located on the original land owned by William
Rose Smith, purchased from the federal government in 1825 and
1826. This is the location of his family cemetery. All those
in the cemetery (estimated to be 15-20 people) are part of the
William Rose Smith family. The land was sold upon his death in
1839. Cemetery is on private property. Only two stones remain
   as of Spring 2009. (http://www.findagrave.com)

William Rose Smith was born c. 1756 in Edinburgh, Scotland, graduated from
medical school there, and came to Virginia c. 1775 with British troops during
the Revolution. His wife was Martha J. Smith, and he was the father of ten
known children. After removing to Putnam County, Indiana (c. 1825) he became
an Elder in the Church of the Brethren. He died April 1839. He and his
wife, who predeceased him, are buried on his land in Putnam County, Indiana.

The father of William Guilliams is said to have been Edgecomb Guilliams,
born 20 February 1742 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia,
who married Adelphe Hunter, daughter of Peter Hunter and Ann Cash. His will,
dated 30 October 1798 and proved 2 June 1806 in Franklin County, Virginia,
does name a son William. However, this line goes back to England, not
Scotland, and does not explain the family relationship to William Rose Smith.

FOUR MILE CREEK

Merab Brown was the daughter of William Brown Jr. and Eva Kingery (1791-
1871). There is a reference on the web that lists their daughter Merab
(1815-1872) as having married “Librens?” They were married on 3 November
1809 in Preble County, Ohio, and lived in Harmony Township, Union County,
Indiana. Merab Brown, mother of Marian Helen Guilliams, was born c. 1815
in Ohio (ref. 1860 United States census), died 26 December 1870 (ref.
http://www.findagrave.com), and married secondly Joseph W. Lykens (or
Likens), so this is clearly the same person. William Brown Jr. was the son
of William Brown Sr. and Sarah Guffy, who obtained a land grant in Union
County, Indiana in 1805 and are buried there. Eva Kingery was the daughter
of Jacob Kingery Sr. and Franky Kingery, who arrived in 1806 (see below).

Union County, Indiana borders Preble County, Ohio, where in 1803 a settlement
on Little Four Mile Creek was founded by the Church of the Brethren. In 1805
a wedge of land, known as a “gore,” in adjacent Indiana Territory, was opened
for settlement. Jacob and Franky Kingery came from Franklin County, Virginia
to join the new settlement in 1806, accompanied by seven sons and daughters,
many of them married with children. Jacob Kingery Sr. died 29 September 1811
and is buried in Union County, Indiana. He was the son of Peter Kingery,
whose will was proved on 16 January 1786 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
