said county into the Continental army for the term of during the war – that
immediately after said enlistment, the said Anthony Bewly, and the said Gabriel's
father went to see Gabriel's officers for the purpose of obtaining his release on
account of his minority, but failed, and that the said Gabriel marched with his
company for the seat of war, and was absent several years (the exact time not
remembered by this affiant as stated by his father) with the American army as a
private, and he also believes that his said father stated that the said Gabriel
was taken prisoner at the surrender of Charleston by Gen'l Lincoln – But affiant
does not now remember the names of the officers as stated by his said father,
under whom the said Gabriel served.

This affiant further states that his said father was a man of good character and
high respectability in the community in which he lived, was a brotherinlaw of the
said Gabriel, having married his sister Sally Philips – knew Gabriel's father and
family – resided in the neighborhood at the time of Gabriel's enlistment, and had
every oportunity of knowing the facts and circumstances of his said enlistment, his
marching with the army, the time he was absent and his return home, of Gabriel's
narrative of his service, and the fact that he was recognized by all who knew him
as a soldier of the revolution. Affiant further states that it is and has been a
well established fact with the said Gabriel's family and relatives, that he did
actually serve as a soldier in the american army in the war of the revolution, that
he enlisted in Loudon Co. Virginia, was taken prisoner at Charleston S.C. made his
escape, and came home to Virginia after more than two years service.

He further states that he is a nephew of the said Gabriel and Milly Philips, but
that he has stated the foregoing as a disinterested person without the least
expectation of being a beneficiary
