JOHN AND DIANNAH PHILLIPS

State of Tennessee )
Hawkins County ) On this Twenty seventh day of April one thousand Eight
hundred and forty six, personally appeared, before me Nicholas Beckler a Justice
of the peace for said County, William Keele, a resident of the County and state
aforesaid, aged seventy six years past, who after being first duly sworn according
to law doth on his oath make the following Affidavit relative to Milly Philips of
said County (widow of Gabriel Philips) who is about to apply for a Pension viz: –

That he was well acquainted with the said Gabriel and Milly Philips in Henry County
Virginia, that he knew them before they were married, from the fact that the said
Milly was his full sister, and that he was at the wedding and saw them married in
said County of Henry in the state of Virginia when he was about twelve or thirteen
years old. He cannot state precisely the date at which they were married; but he
is positive that he was at the wedding and saw them married in said County, by
William Lovela babtist preacher, who lived on his (affiant's) Father's plantation,
and he states that it was the custom to solemnize marriages, upon publication of
bonds.

From his own age, and marriage, and the birth of his oldest child Sarah Keele,
whose birth stands recorded, November the 6th seventeen hundred and Ninety four, he
is certain that the said Gabriel and Milly Philips were living together, on the 1st
of January seventeen hundred and Ninety, Ninety one and up to the time he died in
the fall of Eighteen hundred and Twelve, and that they were acknowledged as husband
and wife by all who knew them.

Affiant also states that at the time of the marriage of said Gabriel Philips and
his sister Milly Keele, which he believes took place about the close of the
revolutionary war, It was generally understood and believed, by all who knew them,
that the said Gabriel had been a regular soldier in the Virginia Line, and had
enlisted in that state for five years, and had served a considerable length of time
– that he was acquainted with said Philips from the time of the marriage until he
died as aforesaid, was in his company frequently, and often heard him speak of his
services in the revolution, and particularly of the amount of wages & Land due him,
which the affiant believes the said Philips never received, and he affiant verrily
believes that the said Philips was a soldier in the war of the revolution

                                                    his
                                               William Keele
                                                    mark

Sworn and subscribed this 27th day of April 1846, before me Nicholas Beckler a
