BELOW:  Civil War monument and gravestone of James A. Phillips (1835-1872),
Burlingame City Cemetery, Osage County, Kansas.  James was promoted on 10 July 1862
from Lieutenant in the Tenth Kansas Infantry to Major in the First Indian Regiment.

BELOW:  Deed to Joseph H. Phillips and James A. Phillips for 160 acres in
Franklin County (now Anderson County), Kansas, dated 6 July 1857 (Book A,
Page 69).  This was the twentieth deed recorded at Paola, Kansas.

BELOW:  Complete list of Senators elected in 1859.  J. A. Phillips of Paola,
Lykins County, from Indiana, born in North Carolina, was only 24 years old.




BELOW:  Officers of the First Indian Regiment of Kansas, also known as the
Home Guards.  The soldiers were Creek and Seminole.  Many of the officers
were white.  From the Adjutant General's Report, State of Kansas, Page 9.




BELOW:  Affidavit of Death for James A. Phillips, who died on 3 May 1872.  His
brother Joseph H. Phillips stated that, to the best of his knowledge and belief,
there were heirs residing in Morgan County, Indiana, and in North Carolina. 




BELOW:  A letter to H. A. Billings, Judge of Probate Court, Osage County, Kansas,
dated April 5, 1873, from William C. Phillips on behalf of himself and Riley Vestal,
half-brother and brother-in-law, respectively, to James A. and Joseph H. Phillips.
The return address is Asheboro, Randolph County, North Carolina.
