APPENDIX WIPP
|
ALL PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE KARST NATURE TRAIL WERE TAKEN, AS THE CROW FLIES, WITHIN THREE MILES
OF THE WIPP SITE, THE WORLD'S FIRST PERMANENT NUCLEAR WASTE DUMP NEAR CARLSBAD, NEW MEXICO.
LEFT: Dense grassy vegetation, found in Nash Draw only
in sinkholes where rainwater collects. In surrounding
terrain mesquite, scrub oak and yucca are dominant.
CENTER: A view looking up the karst valley; although
resembling a desert arroyo, no surface drainage courses
are evident because drainage is entirely underground.
RIGHT: A huge collapse sink, big enough to trap an
elephant. Notice the soil profile; this is located
within a larger karst valley with deep alluvial fill.
