APPENDIX WIPP
|
ALL PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE KARST NATURE TRAIL WERE TAKEN, AS THE CROW FLIES, WITHIN THREE MILES
OF THE WIPP SITE, THE WORLD'S FIRST PERMANENT NUCLEAR WASTE DUMP NEAR CARLSBAD, NEW MEXICO.
LEFT: A small collapse sink beneath a partial overhang,
used as a shelter by nesting packrats.
CENTER: A very deep cave, viewed vertically from above.
It is estimated to be about thirty feet deep and has
grown noticeably during the past ten to fifteen years.
RIGHT: A closeup of the floor of the cave, taken with
a zoom lens while leaning into the cave as someone held
onto my ankles. Note the bones of a large mammal that
fell into the cave and died, unable to escape.
