St. Lawrence NYSARC, Inc. has started an After School Program at Canton Central School. The program serves individuals with special needs, ranging in age from 12 to 22. We meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:30-3:30. Each day is assigned a specific activity. For example, Tuesdays are devoted to relaxation through Dance Therapy conducted by a certified Dance Therapist. Wednesday is Arts and Crafts day. We have been working with the high school art teacher creating clay projects. Thursday is recreation. Activities include swimming in the school's swimming pool. Every 4-6 weeks the activities are changed to keep things new and exciting. The program's goal is to provide social and recreational services for teens with special needs. Our mission is to utilize a school setting to provide the opportunity for teens to participate in peer group activities, make new friends, further develop leisure interests and to become familiar with community experiences. All activities are directed toward personal growth, development and enjoyment for the students. In the upcoming year, we would like to implement an After School Program in several area schools.
