Cemetery Records

M-Film #52 contains cemetery records, arranged by town, for St. Lawrence County only. Not indexed by personal name. Lists of cemeteries and towns covered are available at the SLU Reference or Periodicals desks, and in Special Collections (4 reels). For additional cemetery records, see: Saint Lawrence County Historical Association.

Census Records

Broadly speaking, there are two types of census records: abstracts of census information and enumerations of individuals. Most of SLU’s holdings are the statistical summaries more useful to historians and sociologists than to genealogists. But we do have some enumerations:

M-Film #8. Federal census of 1850. Names of individuals in most North Country counties. (8 reels)

M-Film #9. Federal census of 1840. Names of individuals in the following counties only: Lewis, Madison, Herkimer, Jefferson, Essex, Genesee, and Dutchess. (4 reels)

M-Film #50. 1815 NY State census (for Potsdam only) and part of the state censuses of 1845 (Towns of Lawrence & Hopkinton only, and 1865 (Madrid, Massena, Morristown, Norfolk, Oswegatchie, and Parishville only).

Additional enumerative censuses are at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association.

All of SLU’s other census holdings are the various abstracts & statistical compilations, which do not contain personal names: New York (State). Secretary’s Office: Census of the State of New York for 1835, 1845, 1855, 1865, 1875.

All U.S. 1810-1930 Census for St. Lawrence County are available on microfilm with indexes at Ogdensburg Public Library. Also SUNY Potsdam, 1810-1910. NYS censuses 1905-1925 at the St. Lawrence County Court House.
