Deed from John Aldred and Lillie Ann Aldred, his wife, dated 24 January 1784,
selling 330 acres on Polecat Creek in Randolph County, North Carolina. The land
is located about 6.5 miles from Mount Pleasant Creek and the four "original"
Allreds (John, Thomas, William, and Solomon). The only recorded land grant on
Polecat Creek was to Isaac Julian on 29 December 1762. Isaac Julian was the
brother of Rene (Renny) Julian, who married Catherine Allred, daughter of the
younger John Allred who married Margaret Chaney. Isaac Julian and Rene Julian
were the executors of the younger John Allred's Last Will and Testament, dated
15 September 1792. If "John Aldred" of Polecat Creek was the father of "John
Allrid" of Mount Pleasant Creek, his wife, Lillie Ann, was probably Annie Hamilton.
Note the mark of John Aldred on this deed, a capital A.
Deeds from P. Francis Chaney, dated 26 April 1801, in which he names Margret Allred
as his daughter and Jonathan Allred as his grandson. Jonathan Allred was the son
of the younger John Allred, and was named in John's will dated 15 September 1792,
which is marked not with a capital A, but with three vertical lines connected by a
horizontal line, resembling three plus signs +++ (see previous page) The same mark
appears on a Land Grant to John Alred, dated 15 March 1756. From the deeds shown
below we may conclude that Margaret Chaney was the mother of Jonathan Allred; that
Margaret Chaney was married to John Allred before 8 March 1774, the birth date
inscribed on Jonathan Allred’s gravestone; and that Margaret Chaney survived her
husband, although she is not named in his will.
1790 United States census records showing every head of household named Alred,
Alridge, or Aldridge (none were spelled "Allred") in Randolph County. The five
columns are, from left to right: (1) the number of free white males 16 and over
in the family; (2) the number of free white males under 16 in the family; (3) the
number of free white females in the family; (4) the number of all other free persons,
including colored; (5) the number of slaves; and (6) the sum total of persons in the
household. John Aldred, husband of Lillie Ann Aldred, was deceased. John Alred,
husband of Margaret Chaney, was now John Alred Sen'r, living apart from his
estranged wife. The women in the household of John Alred Sen'r were his daughters
Sarah, Mary, Rebecca, Lydia and Margaret, all unmarried. John listed "my negroe man,"
and William listed "my black man Kintire," as property in their wills.
1755 Tax List from Orange County, which then included what is now Randolph County.
The cropped photograph includes the name of Francis Chaney, father of Margaret
Chaney. No one knows when Margaret Chaney was born; but 1755 is early enough for
her to have been the mother of all of John Allred’s children.
