ANCESTRY OF ELIZABETH JOSEPHINE DILL

The ancestry of David R. Dill, though unknown to us a short time ago, was
traced by using the records of Sterling Community Cemetery as a starting
point. We know David R. Dill’s his first wife was Amanda Ann Gregg, whom he
married on 10 November 1853 in Rush County, Indiana. (Source: Rush County,
Indiana, Marriage Record [Grooms] 1822-1862 Book 1, Page 361) According to
the Mormon website, Amanda died five years later on 19 October 1858 at the
age of 24; she was born 28 October 1832 in Fayette County, Indiana. We know
that David R. Dill died at the age of 83 and was buried in Sterling, Rice,
Kansas on 24 January 1915, which is the date of death given on the Mormon
website for a David R. Dill, who died in Alva, Woods, Oklahoma at the age of
83. The same listing states that David R. Dill was born 14 August 1831 in
Rushville, Rush, Indiana, and that his father was William Dill.

A search of the father’s name, in Indiana, for the relevant time period,
turns up William Dill, who was born 20 February 1793 in Kent County,
Delaware. He was married twice, to Mary “Polly” Heaton on 10 May 1812 in
Champaign County, Ohio (by John Vance), and to Mary Hall on 27 April 1845 in
Rushville, Rush, Indiana. He died on 18 March 1859 in Rushville, Rush,
Indiana. His parents were Solomon (born c. 1760) and Sarah Dill. His first
wife, Mary “Polly” Heaton, was born on 19 August 1797, in Maryland or
Virginia; her parents are not known; she died on 15 July 1843 in Rushville,
Rush, Indiana. William and Polly were buried at East Hill Cemetery in
Rushville. Her gravestone inscription reads: “In memory of Mary, consort of
Wm. Dill who died July 15, 1843, Aged 45 years, 10 mo. & 27 days.” His
reads: “William Dill. Died Mar. 18. 1859; Aged 66 Years & 26 D’s.” HERE

The Dill family is easily traced in the census records. In the 1850 census,
William Dill, a farmer, aged 58, born in Delaware, was living in Rush County,
Indiana, with Mary, his second wife, aged 38, born in Kentucky, and nine
children, all born in Indiana: Eleazer (21), Rachel (20), Gideon (17), Emma
(13), Jonah (12), Matilda (11), Benjamin (4), Solomon (2), and Theodore (6
months). David Dill, aged 18, was on his own, working as a farmer, living in
the home of Mathias and Mary A. Parson in Rush County, Indiana. Benjamin,
Solomon, and Theodore have to be the children of William’s second wife, Mary
Hall, whom he married on 27 April 1845. In the 1860 census, Mary Dill, now a
widow, was living in Rushville, Rush County, Indiana with three children:
Benjamin (14), Solomon (12), and Asestis (8). Theodore is not listed.

According to the Mormon website, Mary Hall, second wife of William Dill, was
born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, the daughter of Robert Hall and Prudence
Pryor. She died 12 October 1881 in Rushville, Rush, Indiana, and is buried
at East Hill Cemetery. Her gravestone inscription reads: “Mary Dill, Wife
of William Dill, Died Oct. 12, 1881. Aged 68 Y. 8 M. 23 D.” Thus she was
born on 19 January 1813.

In the 1840 census, William Dill, aged 50-59 (a mistake), was living in
Rushville Township, Rush County, Indiana with his first wife (aged 40-59),
and eleven children (8 boys and 3 girls). At least five of these children
were not living with William and Mary “Polly” Dill in 1850. Thus, David R.
Dill had at least six full brothers and sisters, and as many as eleven.
