ANCESTRY OF ELIZABETH JOSEPHINE DILL

UNITED STATES CENSUS: BIRTH PLACES OF LIZZIE DILL’S GRANDPARENTS

                                   1880 1900 1910

David R. Dill’s Father: Maryland Ohio Maryland
David R. Dill’s Mother: Maryland Ohio Kentucky

Rebecca E. Kinton’s Father: Indiana Indiana Indiana
Rebecca E. Kinton’s Mother: Pennsylvania Indiana Indiana

From this we can trace Elizabeth J. Dill’s ancestry back, through the Mormon
website, to her maternal grandparents, Sarah Cavitt (born c. 1816) and Thomas
Kinton or Kenton (born c. 1812), who married on 5 August 1834 in Rush County,
Indiana. The Mormon website lists three children: Rebecca Kinton (born
1838), James Stewart Kinton (born 25 May 1842), and Thomas Benton Kinton
(born 1845). The children were born in Rush County, Indiana, or at Mount
Sterling, Van Buren, Iowa.

“Thomas B. Kinton” is on the Civil War Volunteer Roster for Van Buren County,
Iowa; a native of Iowa, he enlisted in the Twenty-First Missouri Infantry,
Company H, on 14 October 1861, and mustered 1 February 1862. He did survive
the war. In the 1870 census, “Thomas B. Kenton,” a farmer, aged 25, born in
Iowa, was living in Buchanan Township, Sullivan County, Illinois, with his
wife Georgiana A. Kinton (aged 21) and a son Wm. N. (aged 1).

There is scant evidence of this family in the United States census. The
1840 census lists only the head of household by name, and differentiates all
others by gender and age bracket. In the 1840 census, Thomas Kenton (aged
20 to 29) is listed in Rushville, Rush, Indiana with a wife (aged 20 to 29)
and three children: one son (aged 10 to 14) and two daughters (both under
5). One of these would be Rebecca Elizabeth Kinton, who was born c. 1838.

Also through the Mormon website, we can trace the ancestry of Sarah Cavitt
back three generations to John and Catherine Cavitt of Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania. Her father, James Forster Cavitt, who died 7 March 1831, is
listed in the 1830 census for Rush County, Indiana as head of household, aged
50-59, living with his wife, aged 40-49, two sons, and six daughters. He
also appears in the 1800 census for Franklin Township, Westmoreland County,
Pennsylvania as “James Cavat,” aged 26-45, with a wife, aged 16-25, and no
children. His father, who died in Westmoreland County in 1798, is listed in
the 1790 census for Hempfield, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania as “Jas Cavat,”
with a wife and five children – one son aged 16 or older, two sons under 16,
and two daughters. From these data, if correct, we may estimate their birth
dates. James Forster Cavitt was between 50 and 60 in 1830, and between 26
and 45 in 1800, so he was born between 1770 and 1774 (c. 1772). His wife
Rebecca was between 40 and 50 in 1830, and between 26 and 45 in 1800, so she
was born between 1780 and 1784 (c. 1782). Rebecca is buried at Blackledge
Cemetery near Mount Sterling, Van Buren County, Iowa. Her gravestone
inscription reads: “Rebecca, Wife of J. F. Cavitt, Died Oct. 18, 1851.”
