ANCESTRY OF THOMAS JEFFERSON HETER

and in other work connected with pioneer farming. They attended winter school
only when hindered from work by inclement weather, but they were given
opportunities for a liberal education whenever possible. The boys followed
farming most of their lives but had learned to combine head-work and all were
considered substantial citizens.”

Posted online is the obituary of George Heter, eldest child of John Heater and
Salome Fries (Bellevue News, 20 February 1892, Page 3, Column 6, transcribed at
http://www.findagrave.com). From this we learn that the migration from Union
County, Pennsylvania to Wayne County, Ohio took place in 1825. Also posted
is the obituary of his wife, Hannah Heter (Bellevue News, 17 June 1893, Page 3,
Column 6, transcribed at http://www.findagrave.com). From this we learn that
Hannah was the daughter of George Jacob Kern and Elizabeth Schock Kern, (of
Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania), and thus she was related to William, Henry, Mary,
and Susannah Schock, spouses of Sarah, Magdalena, Levi, and Eli (Elias) Heater.

John Heater and Salome Fries are not found in the 1830 census. It is possible
that they were in transit, moving from Wayne County to Seneca County. Listed
at Scipio Township, Seneca County, Ohio is Catharine Heater (wife of Adam
Heater), with six children, four boys and two girls, between 5 and 19
years of age. This is consistent with the Mormon website, which lists the
birth date of their youngest child, Hellena (Ellen) Heater, as 26 June 1825.

In the 1840 census for Thompson Township, Seneca County, Ohio, John Heater, age
30-39 (a mistake), is listed with a wife (age 40-49) and seven children, three
girls and four boys, between 5 and 19 years of age. These would be Sarah,
John, Magdalena, Levi, Eli, Adam, and Eliza. Two of the oldest boys are
gone: George Heater (born 17 January 1815) and Jacob (born 4 March 1820).
William Heater is living in Thompson Township with a wife and two girls under
five. And there is another John Heater, probably the son of Adam and Catharine
Heater, with a wife and four children (three boys and one girl, all under 10).
