In the fall of 1877 (sic), Mr. Heter’s parents came to Sterling,
bringing with them his brother Frank, his sister – who is now Mrs.
Cleghorn – and himself. His father erected what was at that time
the finest farm home and stable in this section, and only because
of this heavy investment remained here through the drouth and
consequent hard times of the early ‘80s. Thomas J. Heter, with his
father and brother, planted the fine trees which now furnish grateful
shade on the place, and also set out a good orchard.
Thomas Jefferson Heter and Elizabeth Josephine Dill had eight children. One
died young, before the 1900 census, which asked “Mother of how many children”
and “Number of those children living.” Elizabeth answered 6 and 5. A family
photograph of T. J. and Lizzie Heter, and the seven children who survived,
is posted HERE Their children and grandchildren are listed below.
