LETTERS FROM KANSAS

                                 AN UNNECESSARY WAR

May 27, 1968 Uncle Frank Heter, writing from Sterling, explained the impact of the
Vietnam War upon the farm economy in Kansas. "Farm labor is just about out of the
question any more around here. The boys who normally work on farms are either drafted
or in the armed forces or working in Hutchinson at Cessna making airplane parts."

May 27, 1968 "Now Kansas has passed a law that boys under sixteen can run tractors on
the farms without going to a school & passing a test first. We all are hoping that this
unnecessary war will end soon & things can get back to somewhere near normal again."
