LOVERS AND FRIENDS

I’d rather have a friend than have a lover.
Would I be risking one to have the other?
I am still friends with those I have befriended,
But all my many love affairs have ended.

I do not ever want to treat you wrong.
If I were to come on to you too strong,
Would you and I still be the best of friends,
Or would you never trust in me again?

If we should ever have a love affair,
To end it would be more than I could bear.
To look at you would surely break my heart,
And then we might be better off apart.

Only love can make you feel so sad.
I’ll always wonder what we might have had,
Because I am afraid to say how much
I wish that I could feel your loving touch.
