JOHN AND DIANNAH PHILLIPS

John Phillips last appears on the List of Tithables for Loudoun County, Virginia
in 1785. John Phillips first appears in the United States census for Rowan County,
North Carolina in 1790, and is listed again in 1800. Thus the family's migration
from Virginia to North Carolina occurred between 1785 and 1790.

In the 1790 census, John has a wife (Diannah), one boy over 16 (Robert), two boys
under 16, and four daughters. Three of the girls living in their home must have
been Ruth (married 9 December 1793), Rebecah (marriage date unknown), and Mary Ann
(married 6 March 1790). Although the official enumeration day of the 1800 census
was 4 August 1800, Mary Ann is probably enumerated with this household, just as
Samuel Cummins is enumerated in the household of his father, Samuel Cummins.

In the 1800 census, John is aged 45 or older (born before 1755). His wife
(Diannah) is aged 26-44 (born 1756-1774). They have two boys aged 10-15, two boys
under 10, and a girl under 10. As stated, Diannah had three boys (James, Elijah
and Stephen) and one girl (Mary). The identity of the fourth boy is not known.
Robert, born January 1773, would not be listed as under 15 in the 1800 census.

Five of John's sons appear on the List of Tithables for Loudoun County – Thomas,
John Jr., Gabriel, Ezra and Jonathan, in that order (see above). Marriage records
exist for six of John's children – Gabriel, Ezra, John Jr., Mary Ann, Ruth, and
James, in that order (see below). Census records after marriage have been found
for eight of John's children – Ezra, Jonathan, Robert, Ruth, Mary Ann, James,
Elijah, and Stephen (see below). Valuable genealogical information has been
gleaned from the Revolutionary War pension case for Milly Philips, widow of Gabriel
(more on this later). A timeline now emerges much more clearly than before.
