                     Richard Hayes Phillips, Ph.D.
                    Grandson of Louis Lee Sharrock

INTRODUCTION

Louis Lee Sharrock was my maternal grandfather. Prior to this
investigation, we knew almost nothing about his ancestry, other than the
name of his mother, Etta Mae. We did not know the name of his father, and
we still do not know the name of his grandfather.

We do have the obituary of his wife, Estella Hayes, my maternal
grandmother, identified in her obituary as Mrs. Lee Sharrock. Born in
Colton, New York on 30 November 1890, she was the only child of Michael
Hayes and Harriet Salls. After graduating from the Potsdam Normal School
she taught first in the Colton school before accepting a position as a
teacher in Atlantic City, New Jersey. While teaching there, she met
Lee Sharrock, to whom she was married in about 1915.

Mr. and Mrs. Sharrock moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where Mrs. Sharrock
taught for several years. Later they moved to Augusta, Maine and Kittery
Point, Maine, where Mrs. Sharrock taught as well. In 1937 they moved to
Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where Mrs. Sharrock died on 11 April 1938, at
the age of 47. Besides her husband, she was survived by two daughters,
Shirley Jane, 13, and Sally Ann, 6.

Louis Lee Sharrock’s younger daughter, Sally Ann Moynihan of White River
Junction, Vermont, is able to provide some vital information. According
to Mrs. Moynihan, both Lewis Lee Sharrock and his younger brother Francis
were from Egg Harbor, Atlantic County, New Jersey, and it is her
understanding that they were born there. Francis’ wife was Elizabeth, and
they had a daughter named Mary. When Sally’s father died in 1968, she was
informed by his step-daughter that he had been buried in Chula Vista,
San Diego, California. His second wife was Doris Viola Hunter, whom he
married in 1938, shortly after the death of Estella Hayes Sharrock. Mrs.
Moynihan believes that Doris Viola Hunter was born in Massachusetts. She
died on the road, on the way to California, when Mrs. Moynihan (then Sally
Ann Garner) was living in Potsdam, New York, which would fix the date as
no earlier than 1965. Lewis Lee Sharrock’s mother was Etta Mae Sharrock,
and her second husband was Albert Fanslau, both of New Jersey.

From the Social Security death records posted on the Mormon website we
know that Louis Sharrock was born on 30 April 1893, and died in April
1968 in Carlsbad, San Diego, California. From the same records we know
that his brother, Francis Sharrock, was born on 6 November 1896, and died
in April 1982 in Nutley, Essex, New Jersey. No other records of the
Sharrock brothers appear on the Mormon website or, so far as I know,
anywhere else on the web.

We know from the 1920 census records for St. Lawrence County, New York,
that Lee Sharrock was born in New Jersey, and both of his parents were born
in New Jersey. At that time, Lee “Scharrack” was living with his wife
