ANCESTRY OF LOUIS LEE SHARROCK

Stella “Scharrack” at the home of Stella’s parents, Michael Hayes and Hattie
E. Hayes on Main Street in Colton, New York. Lee, age 26, is identified as
an electrician, and Stella, age 29, is identified as a School Teacher.

And we know from the 1930 census records that Estella J Sharrock, age 39,
and Louis L. Sharrock, age 36, were then living as boarders in the house of
Joseph A. Robicheaux in Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama. Estella is listed
as a teacher, Louis L. as an electrical engineer. My mother, Shirley Jane
Sharrock, was raised by her grandparents, Michael and “Hattie” Hayes.

After the death of my mother Shirley Sharrock Phillips on 22 August 2000,
I found notes in her handwriting inside the bible given her on 25 December
1932 by her maternal grandmother, “Nana Hayes” (whose maiden name was
Harriet Salls). It includes the names and relationships of many persons on
her mother’s side of the family, but nothing about her father’s side, other
than the name of her father, which she spelled “Lewis Lee.” This has been
the cause of some confusion. According to Mrs. Moynihan, his name is
spelled “Louis Lee” on the marriage announcement of his stepdaughter
Barbara, who married Michael Mone.

Presented in the following pages are the results of my ongoing
investigation into the ancestry of Louis Lee Sharrock, culled almost
entirely from United States census records at http://www.ancestry.com,
and supplemented by the Mormon website at http://www.familysearch.org,
and by genealogical postings on the websites of allied families.

ORIGINS OF THE SHARROCKS IN AMERICA

The first appearance in America of the name of Sharrock in actual records
posted on the Mormon website is the birth of Elizabeth Sharrock on
15 April 1776, in Bertie County, North Carolina, to Thomas Sharrock and
Barsheba (sic) Daughtry. She married Arthur Hollowell on 12 January 1797
in Bertie County, and on 17 November 1797 was named as Elizabeth Hollowell
in the will of her brother William Sharrock, who also named his son
Griffin Sharrock and his brother James Sharrock. The will was witnessed
by father Thomas Sharrock. The marriage of William Sharrock to Winefred
Griffin on 22 Nov 1792 in Bertie County is posted on the Mormon website,
but none of these persons appear in subsequent records. It is stated
elsewhere on the web that Griffin Sharrock died in 1805, underage. I find
no evidence that the surname of Sharrock was passed on from this line.

The next appearances in actual records are the birth on 13 May 1797 and
the death on 26 Sep 1799 of Polly Sharrock at Peekskill, Westchester,
New York. Her parents are identified as James Sharrock or Sherick and
Jane Everard. Elsewhere on the web it is stated that James Sharrock and
Jane Everard were married on 1 January 1783 in New York, New York, and
his birthplace is invariably given as Liverpool, Lancashire, England.
James Sharrock is buried in Leatherwood Cemetery (a.k.a. Miller's
Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery), Millwood Township, Guernsey County,
Ohio. His grave is marked by a deteriorating stone, cracked in half.
Inscribed on the monument are these words:

"James Sherrick who departed this life March 28 1826 ae 76 yrs."
