ALLRED FAMILY HISTORY
Last Revised February 26, 2010
Richard Hayes Phillips, Ph.D.
Great-Great-Great-Grandson of
Stephen Phillips and Delilah Allred
Delilah Allred was my great-great-great-grandmother. On 13 April 1819 in
Randolph County, North Carolina she married Stephen Phillips, father of
Joseph Harmon Phillips, grandfather of William G. “Will” Phillips, whose
lineage is presented in a separate study HERE Their marriage is documented
in “North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868,” where her name is spelled
“Delila Alred.”
Delilah Allred was the fourth child, and third daughter, of Joseph Allred,
Farmer (born 15 September 1772, died 27 February 1856, aged 84 years). His
wife was Rachael Allred (born c. 1773, died 3 March 1856, aged 83 years),
of Randolph County, North Carolina. Their dates of death (five days apart)
and ages at death are known with certainty, being carved in marble on their
gravestones at Patterson Grove Cemetery, Randolph County, North Carolina.
The spelling of “Rachael” comes from her gravestone and from the census
records. Joseph (aged 77) and Rachael Allred (aged 74, blind) appear in
the 1850 census for Northern Division, Randolph County, with three of
their children: Balaam (aged 43), Anna (aged 42), and James (aged 40).
Children of Joseph Allred:
John Allred (born c. 1795, died 9 July 1890, aged 95 years). He married
Amelia (Milly, Millie) Armstrong (born c. 1798, died 19 September 1871, aged
72 years), daughter of Isaac Armstrong and Mary Chappell. They lived in
Richmond County, North Carolina. Oldest children aged 5-9 in 1830 census.
Probably married not before 1820. Both are buried in Old Buffalo Cemetery
in Richmond County. The name is spelled “Aldred” in 1850 and 1860 census.
Mary (Polly) Allred (born 1797, died 1858). Married Daniel Chisholm (son of
Daniel and Miriam Chisholm) of Montgomery County, North Carolina, 8 March
1821, (born c. 1795, died 27 May 1849). Buried in Chisholm Family Cemetery.
Martha Ann (Patsey) Allred (born 20 May 1799, died 1 June 1881). Married on
28 December 1829 to James Patterson (born 26 February 1794, died 22 June 1871).
Both are buried at Patterson Grove Cemetery, Randolph County, North Carolina.
Delilah Allred (born c. 1801). Married Stephen Phillips 13 April 1819,
Randolph County, North Carolina (born c. 1798, will dated 18 October 1855).
Their family records are presented in a separate study HERE Stephen married
secondly Elizabeth Bailey, 11 August 1847.
Balaam Allred (20 Jun 1807, Died 2 Oct 1857). A modern inscription on a
granite gravestone reads “June 20 1803” and “Oct. 27, 1857” but these dates
are wrong. The original marble stone still stands behind it, and it clearly
reads 2 October 1857 for the death date; the birth year is illegible, but the
month and date are clear, and Balaam Allred was 43 years old in the 1850
census, which was enumerated on 29 November 1850, thus fixing his birth date
as 20 June 1807, and his age at death at “51 yrs 30 mo & 12 days” as his
