JOHN AND DIANNAH PHILLIPS

AFFIDAVIT OF ROBERT PHILIPS, COLES COUNTY, ILLINOIS, 28 JANUARY 1850

This affidavit was entered into evidence in the Revolutionary War pension
case of Miliah (Milly) Keele, widow of Gabriel Philips. Robert, then 77,
recalled events that occurred when he was a boy in Loudoun County, Virginia.
Robert Phillips was four years old in the winter of 1777 when his brother
Gabriel, then fifteen, enlisted in the American army and was taken from his
father's barn by a file of eight armed soldiers, in uniform, and marched off
to war. His father and Anthony Bewly, who latter married Robert's sister
Sarah "Sallie" Phillips, tried to get Gabriel released on the plea that he
was under age, but failed. Gabriel was taken prisoner at the surrender of
Charleston, South Carolina, on 12 May 1780. He and six others made their
escape by swimming. This affidavit is transcribed in its entirety. Other
affidavits, mostly from family members, are transcribed in whole or in part.
