David L. Sharrock died young. In the 1920 census, Etta, now 45, already a
widow, was still living in Atlantic City. The name is spelled “Sherrick” in
the 1920 census. Lewis Lee had moved on, but Francis, now 23, and Albert
Fanslau, now 40, were still living in Etta’s household. Francis had a wife,
aged 18, named Elizabeth, and a daughter named Mary, eleven months old.

ANCESTRY OF NAOMIE LEE SHARROCK
Naomie Lee Sharrock, grandmother of Louis Lee Sharrock, appears in the 1880
census, at the age of 28, as the mother of David Sharrock, then 7 years old.
No one else was living in the household. At that time, Taylor Sharrock,
then 5 years old, was living with Naomie’s parents, David and Mary Lee.
Taylor is identified as their grandson. Naomie was probably his mother.
In the 1870 census, Naoma (sic) was a single woman, then 17 years old,
living with her parents, David and Mary Lee, in Hamilton Township, Atlantic
County, New Jersey. Thus she was married and separated (probably widowed)
between 1870 and 1880. The identity of her husband (the grandfather of
Louis Lee Sharrock) may never be known. Perhaps her husband was Larner J.
Sharrock (born c. 1838), John Taylor Sharrock (born c. 1846), or George
Francis Sharrock (born c. 1850), all sons of John M. and Ann Sharrick o
Egg Harbor Township. But none of these three men appear in the 1870 census,
anywhere in the country. Perhaps one of them reappeared by 1872, married
Naomie Lee, fathered two sons (David and Taylor), and disappeared again
before 1880. Perhaps they were lost at sea, like their brother William.
Also living with David and Mary Lee in 1870 was Joseph Emens, a Wood
Chopper, 88 years old. Such occurrences are gold mines for genealogists.
