ANCESTRY OF LOUIS LEE SHARROCK

                          ANCESTRY OF ETTA MAE ADAMS

                         Richard Hayes Phillips, Ph.D.
                       Great-Grandson of Etta Mae Adams

                         Last Revised August 10, 2010

Louis Lee Sharrock and Estella Hayes were my maternal grandparents. My
mother, Shirley Jane Sharrock, knew them only as a little girl, after which
Shirley was raised by her grandparents, Michael Hayes and Harriett “Hattie”
Salls. Her sister, Sally Ann Sharrock, was only six years old when Estella
died; Sally was raised by her father and her stepmother, Doris Viola Hunter.
Neither Shirley nor Sally so much as knew the name of their paternal
grandfather, David L. Sharrock, who died before either of them were born.
They knew their paternal grandmother as Etta Mae “Nana” Fanslau who, after
the death of Mr. Sharrock, had married secondly Albert “Grandpa” Fanslau.

Etta Mae’s maiden name is documented in two sources: (1) the death record for
Louis L. Sharrock (died 25 April 1968, Carlsbad, San Diego, California) gives
his mother’s maiden name as Adams; and (2) the United States census (1910,
Atlantic City, New Jersey) lists, in the household of David L. Sharrick (sic,
age 35), his father-in-law, Stephen H. Adams (age 72). From the same census
we know that Etta Sharrick (age 35), her two sons, Lee Sharrick (age 17) and
Francis Sharrick (age 13), and Albert Fanslau (age 29), a boarder in the
household, were all born in New Jersey.

David L. Sharrock, not being listed in the 1920 census, probably died before
then. In Atlantic City, New Jersey, living in the household of Etta Sherrick
(sic, age 45), were her son, Francis Sherrick (age 23); her daughter-in-law,
Elizabeth Sherrick (age 18); her granddaughter Mary E. Sherrick (11 months);
and Albert Fanslau (age 40), still a boarder. Albert Fanslau and Etta Mae
Adams Sharrock were married c. 1926, as they are married four years in the
1930 census for Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Albert Fanslau was no doubt part of the only Fanslau family in the county.
Christian and Helena Fanslau are listed in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census for
Hamilton, Atlantic, New Jersey. Christian Fanslau is also listed in the 1930
census with his brother August (age 73), born in Germany, emigrated 1884.

According to the 1900 census, Christian Fanslau was born November 1845, and
Helena Fanslau was born April 1847, both in Germany. They were married c.
1869, as they are married 30 years in 1900 and 41 years in 1910. Christian
and Helene Fanselow are on the passenger list, with their son Rudolph (age 2)
and their daughter Marie (10 months), for the ship St. Olaf, which sailed
from Hamburg, Germany, and arrived in the Port of New York in June 1872.
Other census records identify a son William (born c. 1875, Pennsylvania) and
a daughter Tillie (born December 1884, New Jersey). Albert (born c. 1880,
New Jersey) is not found with Christian and Helena Fanslau, as the family
cannot be located in the 1880 census, and the 1890 census records burned.

Etta Mae Adams appears in the 1880 census for Randolph, Burlington, New
Jersey as Mary E. Adams (age 6), living with her father Steven H. Adams,
Farmer (age 40), her mother Fannie Adams (age 33), and her brother Joseph M.
Adams (age 8). All were born in New Jersey, and all four of Etta Mae’s
