ANCESTRY OF LOUIS LEE SHARROCK

grandparents were born in New Jersey. In the 1900 census for Washington,
Burlington, New Jersey, Stephen H. Adams, Widower, House Carpenter (born
November 1838) is living with his son Carl Adams (born January 1887). In the
1910 census, as stated above, Stephen H. Adams, Widower (age 72) is living in
Atlantic City, New Jersey in the household of his son-in-law, David L.
Sharrick (age 35). According to their gravestone inscriptions, Stephen H.
Adams was born Oct. 12, 1837 and died Oct. 14, 1911; Fannie E. Adams, his
wife, was born Sep. 15, 1846 and died Feb. 21, 1900. They are buried at
Lower Bank Cemetery, Burlington, New Jersey. (http://www.findagrave.com)

According to two entries on the Mormon website, Stephen Henry Adams married
Francis E. “Fannie” Cramer on 27 October 1867 at Lower Bank, Burlington,
New Jersey. While the source information is not disclosed, the entries are
consistent with census records which identify four children, the eldest being
Mary Ida Adams (born c. 1869). Etta Mae’s other known siblings were two
brothers: Joseph M. Adams (born c. 1872) and Carl Adams (born January 1887).

Both Stephen and Fannie came from large families. Census records (and
credible web postings) identify four brothers and four sisters of Stephen H.
Adams, and three brothers and seven sisters of Francis E. Cramer. Thus, Etta
Mae Adams would have had 36 aunts and uncles if all her parents’ siblings had
reached maturity and married.

The 1850 census for Washington, Burlington, New Jersey documents that Stephen
Henry Adams was the son of Stephen Adams, Hotel Keeper (age 43) and Lorina
Adams (age 49). In the 1860 census, Lorinah Adams (age 59), now widowed, is
the Hotel Keeper. Lorina Adams appears in the 1870 census (age 69) and the
1880 census (age 78) for Randolph, Burlington, New Jersey, always with some
of her children. Unverified web postings state that Stephen Adams married
Lorina or Lorinah Brush on 14 December 1832 (in Burlington, Burlington, New
Jersey); that Stephen was born 21 February 1807 and died 19 July 1851 (at
Lower Bank, Burlington, New Jersey); and that Lorina Brush Adams died on
22 August 1888 (at Lower Bank, Burlington, New Jersey). All these dates are
]onsistent with census records (they died before 1860 and 1900 respectively,
and their first child, Benjamin Brush Adams, Boatman, Sailor, was born c.
1833, being age 27 in 1860, age 37 in 1870, and age 47 in 1880.

Stephen Adams (born c. 1807) is said to have been the son of David Adams and
Elizabeth Robbins, but I have found no evidence of this, so we must consider
his ancestry unknown. Lorina Adams is said to have been the daughter of Ard
and Margarett Brush, and the granddaughter of Capt. Benjamin and Rebecca
Brush. Census records, birth records, marriage records, and cemetery records
from two states can be pieced together to prove this lineage, as shown below.

In the Barbour Collection (vital records from Connecticut, prior to 1870),
Ard Brush (born 2 February 1782, Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut), is listed
as the son of Benjamin and Rebecca Finch. In the 1810 census for Stamford,
Fairfield, Connecticut appears Ard Brush (age 26-45), his wife (age 26-45),
one son (under 10), and one daughter (under 10). The daughter is the right
age to be Lorina Brush (born 1801). In the Index of Wills for Burlington
County, New Jersey appears the will of Ard Brush, dated and inventoried 1817.
In the 1830 census for Washington, Burlington, New Jersey appears Margarett
Brush, widow (age 60-69), one son (age 20-29) and one daughter (age 20-29).
Again, the daughter is the right age to be Lorina Brush (born 1801), not
married until 14 December 1832, still living with her mother in 1830.
